MS Girls Basketball Game Cancelled Tonight 😕
Thursday, Dec. 3rd
Due to NEKL Tournament beginning this Sat., this game will not be made up this season.

The JCNHS JV Scholars Bowl team placed 2nd at the Valley Falls meet that took place on 12/1/2020. Congrats to all that participated.

The USDA announced a while back, we will have FREE meals (breakfast and lunch) through the end of the school year! Originally, they had thought the funding may not be available after December. I hope your child/children is/are taking advantage of FREE meals provided by our dedicated food service team. I apologize for being delayed in announcing this great news! I hope this continues to reduce financial burdens during these trying times. If he/she hasn't been, your student may pick up a grab-and-go breakfast to take to their classroom in the morning to begin taking advantage of this program.

Between introducing freezing point depression (we called it "making ice cream") in chemistry, an excellent mini-concert (really sorry...no pics, but great music), and Jenny Cox teaching us line dancing (thank you Jenny!!) ....I'd say we had a pretty great Day Before Thanksgiving Break! I am always amazed at the level of student participation at JCNHS...and they did it again! We have great kids. Hope you all have a great (and safe) Thanksgiving!!!

JCN Families,
As you are hearing some Kansas schools are closing for the semester, at JCN we have many students returning from recent quarantines. Our positivity rate also fell yesterday to 1.1% (down from 1.8%) and then fell again today to 0.9%. Utilizing our gating criteria, the board of education determined under 2.5% positivity rate would remain green…. with considerations. There may be times when we are unable to staff classrooms or bussing, for example. In those cases, we would need to make adjustments to best address learning.
In Jefferson County superintendents, health department and emergency management meet weekly. We review data and discuss the current situation. As you know, our state and county numbers are at a high rate currently. However, school spread has been extremely minimal so far. Our mask wearing, distancing, hand washing, cleaning, etc. are working. You can assist us in keeping students in school by following these safety measures outside of school. Your precautions may also help prevent the flu, strep throat, etc. These illnesses typically cause us issue in the upcoming months with absences.
We will continue to monitor for further spikes in the virus. We may move to more precautionary measures such as less lunchroom numbers, reducing activities, etc. as part of a yellow phase. As we proceed, I think we can all agree our work with students and instruction is much stronger in person. We are aiming to be in school through Thanksgiving and hopefully through the end of the year. If a need would arise warranting moving to remote learning, we will do our best to give preschool through 8th grade parents a minimum of five days notice.
Keep monitoring for symptoms and exposures. Letting others know when you are sick, is critical in slowing our community spread. We appreciate your support.

MS Girls Basketball Tonight Postponed (Monday, Nov. 16)
We will be looking at reschedule dates for our matchup with McLouth

My apologies. We will be slightly delayed with our COVID information while we work with our website host to add to our website. In the meantime, here are today's numbers of COVID cases at JCN. It also shows our quarantined numbers through yesterday. We are still investigating yesterday's new cases and will adjust quarantined numbers as they are updated through the health department. Watch our app/website over the next few days as we add new, helpful information.

We have a couple more positive cases of COVID, one in our elementary building and one in our middle school. Again any possible exposure would have taken place last week. We have contacted families of any student needing to remain home tomorrow while health officials finalize their investigation and contact parents.
At this point, I realize we are all much more concerned over the operation of school. So far the cases I have reported appear to have started in the community and then, unknowingly, created exposure at school prior to symptoms beginning. We have another few days to see if the cases from last week (and primarily Halloween weekend) spread further. Hopefully, our quarantining students will be the necessary mitigation of spread.
If anyone in your household is experiencing any symptoms related to the COVID virus, please take the necessary precautions. I so appreciate the families of these students reaching out to us immediately and keeping their students home this week. By doing so, our quarantine list remains smaller.
Tomorrow, we will be adding information to our website to share our current number of cases as well as quarantines. We will also add other important information reviewing our plans if numbers continue to rise. We do want to keep students in school but are continuously reviewing data to maintain safety in doing so.
I want to thank you all for your work during this unsettling time. Keep positive and healthy!
