Christy (Hanika) Schuler visited Mrs. Deviney’s 1st grade class for Veterans Day. She served as a flight medic on helicopters for 8 years. Christy earned the rank of an E-5 Sergeant. Her travels included taking her to Kuwait & Iraq. She is the mother of JCNES students: Cannon, Quinley & Caroline. And future Charger, Kelsyn. 💚 Thank you, Sergeant Hanika for visiting our classroom & teaching us about Veterans Day. Thank you for your service to our country. 🇺🇸

We were honored to have local author, Fran Borin visit the EMS library today. Mrs. Borin grew up in McLouth and is a former teacher. Fran writes historical fiction for middle grades and her second book Orion O'Brien and the Spirit of Quindaro is a 2024 Kansas Notable Book. The fourth through eighth grade attended her presentation. If you would like to order Mrs. Borin's books visit her website orionobrien.com or ask Mrs. Courtney for an order form.

On Saturday, the JCN Boys Cross Country Team ran at Wamego Country Club in the Kansas State 2A Cross Country Championship. They placed 9th as a team, with Lucas Meredith placing 11th out of 111 boys total, earning himself a medal. The boys competed very well on one of the toughest courses in some of the wettest, muddiest conditions we have seen against the best competition. Thank you to all who showed up to watch our boys compete, and thank you to all who have supported us throughout the year.

Bond Question of the Day - Change in Bond Formula - Question: It seems like we used to get more bond money for a mill’s worth of taxes. Has something changed since the last bond election? Answer: Yes, unfortunately, the state laws have changed, reducing the amount of bond and interest aid the district receives. Our previous bond was passed prior to July 1, 2015, when our state aid paid 57% of the bond and interest payments for us. For bonds passed after June 30, 2022, the state aid is much less. Our district now qualifies for 6% state aid, meaning 6% of each principal and interest payment is covered by the state. Unfortunately, this does mean it takes a larger mill increase for local taxpayers to make any bond and interest payments than it would have in the past. As a district with a low assessed valuation per pupil, we are one of the few districts in the state that still receives any state assistance with bond and interest payments. Interest rates also impact the bond payment and associated mill rate, but the state aid percentage is the biggest factor on why it takes more local effort to repay a bond.
