It’s a great day to be a Charger!

This week in chemistry, we performed two fun labs. We have been discussing mixtures and pure substances, and the differences between them. Some mixtures can be separated out by simple methods, one of which is chromatography. In our first lab, students put assorted “inks” on filter paper and separated out the colors that are not normally seen by using that method. Some of them look especially nice under UV light. In the second lab, they decomposed wood (a pure substance (kind of)), and found that several compounds were produced. One of the surprise products was methane, a flammable gas. Student always enjoy these two labs, primarily because in one they make “pretty refrigerator art”, and in the other, something burns or goes boom!
